Our Story

Starting as a small cafe, only serving freshly roasted coffee and baked goods, Steel Penny opened its doors in 2020, tucked beside a scrap metal yard in Hatboro, PA. What began as a small neighborhood coffee shop quickly grew into a local favorite today known for much more. 

Owner Mike Whalen had a vision from the start: to bring high-quality coffee and food to an unexpected corner of Hatboro — and build something truly special for the community. Chef Dean, a CIA graduate, who’s been perfecting dough and sandwiches since he was 16, transformed Steel Penny from a simple café into a go-to spot for fresh, creative food — especially our Detroit-style pizza. 

At Steel Penny, we’re committed to serving scratch-made, thoughtfully prepared food using fresh, high-quality ingredients. Our menu continues to grow with new seasonal specials, creative sandwiches, and bold flavors that reflect our dedication to doing things the right way — with care, craft, and a love for great food and beverages.
